WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump abruptly fired Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden on Thursday as the White House continues to purge the federal government of those perceived to oppose the president and his agenda. Hayden was notified in an email late Thursday from the White House's Presidential Personnel Office, according to an email obtained by The Associated Press. Confirmed by the Senate to the job in 2016, Hayden was the first woman and the first African American to be librarian of Congress. 'Carla," the email began. "On behalf of President Donald J. Trump, I am writing to inform you that your position as the Librarian of Congress is terminated effective immediately. Thank you for your service.' A spokesperson for the Library of Congress confirmed that the White House told Hayden she was dismissed. Hayden, whose 10-year term was set to expire next year, had come under backlash from a conservative advocacy group that accused her and other library leaders of promoting children's books with 'radical' content and literary material authored by Trump opponents. 'The current #LibrarianOfCongress Carla Hayden is woke, anti-Trump, and promotes trans-ing kids,' the group, American Accountability Foundation, said on its X account earlier Thursday, just hours before the firing was made public. 'It's time to get her OUT and hire a new guy for the job!" The unexpected move infuriated congressional Democrats, who initially disclosed the firing. Connecticut Rep. Rosa DeLauro, the top Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, said Hayden was 'callously fired' by Trump and demanded an explanation from the administration as to why she was dismissed. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., applauded Hayden as 'an accomplished, principled and distinguished Librarian of Congress." 'Donald Trump's unjust decision to fire Dr. Hayden in an email sent by a random political hack is a disgrace and the latest in his ongoing effort to ban books, whitewash American history and turn back the clock," Jeffries said. 'The Library of Congress is the People's Library. There will be accountability for this unprecedented assault on the American way of life sooner rather than later.' At a gala Wednesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio joked that he has assumed three other positions in the Trump administration as national security adviser, acting archivist and acting director of the U.S. Agency for International Development. During his remarks at the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute event, he said leading the Library of Congress 'would be a good job,' then paused and jokingly proposed Florida Rep. The Taraba State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has been plunged into turmoil following the indefinite postponement of its election, which was earlier slated for today, January 17, 2025. This latest postponement, as noted by DAILY POST, marks the second delay in the election process, following an earlier disruption in November 2024 over disputes concerning rotational leadership arrangements. The Catholic Bloc, it will be recalled, had threatened to boycott the election unless their candidate was given the chance to assume the chairmanship position of the association. Efforts to resolve the impasse, including the establishment of an electoral college with representatives from CAN's five blocs, seem not to have yielded results, leaving the chapter in a state of uncertainty. According to reports, the latest postponement stems from a petition filed by the Global Methodist Church against one of the candidates, Rev. Philip Micah Dopah. In the midst of the mounting tension, some stakeholders, who spoke with our reporter, have accused the former CAN chairman, Rev. Isaiah Jirape, of orchestrating the confusion. They also claimed that Jirape is working to influence the election outcome to install a successor who will allow him to maintain control over the association's leadership. His alleged interference, according to the critics, is driven by a personal vendetta against the state governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, who, Daily Post learned, in 2024 declined to reappoint him as Chairman of the Taraba State Christian Pilgrim Welfare Board. Since then, Jirape is said to have used his influence to undermine the governor's preferred candidate, according to one of the critics. Efforts to obtain comments from Jirape have been unsuccessful, as his phone remained unreachable at the time of this report. The ongoing crisis has raised alarms among stakeholders, who fear the prolonged delays and internal conflicts could weaken CAN's unity and diminish its capacity to serve as a voice for the Christian community in Taraba State.

MONTREAL — A Quebecer convicted last year in a domestic homicide that left a woman and two children dead must remain in a men's prison despite identifying as a woman, federal corrections officials said Wednesday. Mohamad Al Ballouz, who now uses the name Levana, was sentenced in December to life in prison with no possibility of parole for 25 years. In 2022, Al Ballouz murdered Synthia Bussières and the couple's sons — five-year-old Eliam and two-year-old Zac — in the Montreal suburb of Brossard. The killer, who was married to Bussières, was also convicted of arson for setting fire to the family condo. Al Ballouz transitioned while in custody, and after being convicted asked to be incarcerated at the Joliette Institution for Women, northeast of Montreal. 'The Correctional Service of Canada can confirm that the intake assessment in this case has been completed and that the inmate will be incarcerated in a men's institution," the agency said in an emailed statement on Wednesday. Citing the federal Privacy Act, it declined to provide any additional information. In the deaths of the boys, the jury found Al Ballouz guilty of first-degree murder, which carries an automatic life sentence without possibility of parole for 25 years. For the second-degree murder conviction in the death of Bussières, parole eligibility was set by the judge at 20 years. That decision was largely symbolic as the total period before being eligible to apply for parole cannot exceed 25 years. Al Ballouz was also sentenced to four years on the arson charge. In January, corrections officials said that offenders are assessed within 60 to 90 days of being sentenced to a federal institution to determine security risks and review details of the case. The assessment permits authorities to determine security level and "appropriate penitentiary placement" based on factors including security of the public, corrections staff and other inmates. "Furthermore, the victims' concerns are taken into account when determining the penitentiary placement," the federal agency said previously. The agency said it works with offenders who request accommodations based on gender identity, including placement that better aligns with the offender's gender identity or expression. The agency said Wednesday that each request for accommodation is assessed individually. "When there are overriding health and safety concerns, the request is denied and alternatives are put in place to meet the offender's gender‑related needs at the institution where they are incarcerated," it said. During sentencing in December at the courthouse in Longueuil, Que., Quebec Superior Court Justice Éric Downs described Al Ballouz as "sadistic" and remorseless. 'The evidence shows that the accused shows no remorse, no empathy. Mohamad Al Ballouz, alias Levana Ballouz, is a deeply narcissistic person,' the judge said. The trial heard Bussières, 38, was stabbed 23 times. At least 11 of the stab wounds were classified as defensive wounds, which the Crown said shows she fought for her life. The boys were then killed before Al Ballouz consumed wiper fluid and set the fire to destroy evidence. An autopsy was not able to establish the exact cause of the boys' deaths.
